to make sure it’s stays safe and sound for as long as possible. But the
unexpected storm, accident, theft or even strong wind could mar your enjoyment
of your boat. So isn’t it worth your while to spend a little bit more and
buy that all-important insurance? Not only do you buy protection for the boat,

Here are some things you may want to consider when purchasing insurance:
- When completing a proposal form give comprehensive details of the vessel and
your experience, this avoids any problems later on.
- Use your vessel within the navigation limits of your policy, if you need to
go outside these limits then request an extension from your insurer prior to departure.
- If you have any Warranties imposed by the insurer make sure that you comply
with them otherwise your policy is null and void.
- When you give a valuation for your vessel this should include all the machinery,
rig, contents, personal items etc. This figure is the amount that you will receive
in the event of a total loss
- Check that the third party liability limit is sufficient for your vessel.
- Check the "Standard and Poors" rating of the proposed insurance
company. This is a rating that is given to each insurance company about their
financial strength, claims paying ability etc. If the rating of your insurance
company is "A" then this should be fine.
- Check the local representation of surveyors / adjusters in the event of a
claim.
- Obtain the emergency hotline 24 / 7 in the event of a loss
- In the event of a loss write down the sequence of events as this will help
you later when you have to complete a claim form.
- Act as a Prudent Assured - in other words act as if you have no insurance.
Make sure that all your necessary safety equipment is up to date and working.
- Your boat insurance needs are unique to you. Make sure the boat insurance
provider has a wide selection of options.
- Although price is important you will need to understand your marine insurance
policy and services behind it. Find a balance between peace of mind, financial
security and price. Make sure you are protected. The lowest price is not always
the best protection.
